Dear friend,
I decided through this letter to share with you every month some of the many secrets hidden behind doors of my overwhelming and unique city.
My personal favorites, in other words: the best of the month to do and to see in Venice.
Venice is an enchanting city but its charm is somehow complex and conflicting.
It is almost impossible to remain unmoved upon your first visit.
In between few people that do not like and appreciate Venice the majority love Venice without reservation, by an absolute love almost obsessive. Venice if you get to spend a little more then few days and reach behind corner, it gets to you almost like a virus, which can lead to an incurable passion.
No other city in the world is more exotic, its stimulates many memories and founds its roots in a so cosmopolite culture. On the other end it can also be called a ‘city salon’ where you can walk through one side to the other in less then an hour.
If you will stay long enough Venice will let you perceive lot more then the mere physical pleasure of the contact with the city and its famous buildings. It is a permanent challenge to the sensitiveness and imagination , impossible to capture it completely.
Winter in Venice:
I may say it is my favorite time of the year, as for many Venetian too! Spring or summer is not less beautiful but I believe it is just more special to live in Venice now.
There is more genuineness around , lots of small new events and shows not ment to attract large crowd but only for ‘friends and friends of friends’.
VENICE'S CARNIVAL
(Carnival 2010 - February 6-16)
The history of the Venice Carnival tradition began after 1162. The Republic defeated Ulrico, Patriarch of Aquileia in that year, and began a tradition
of slaughtering a bull and 12 pigs in the Piazza San Marco around Shrove Tuesday to commemorate the victory. The first document mentioning the use of masks dates back to 1268, and now masks have become a staple of the celebration. One can see decorative masks all over Venice during Carnevale.
Carnival takes place in Venice during the twelve days before Ash Wednesday with many events all over the city, from improvised street shows to performances put on by the organizers. Every year the City chooses a central idea taken from various cultural or show-biz themes. Several events take place throughout the city, from Carnival feasts and masked balls in private palaces to people in masks who happily take to the streets and squares in search of fun... It's possible to see every kind of costume, from 18th century noblewomen to the most inventive and creative modern costumes.
The heart of Carnival is Saint Mark's Square, with its huge stage for concerts and shows, but also the city's other main squares act as perfect stages for masqueraders who wish to become, at least for a few hours a year, the protagonists of another life.
The culminating moments of Venice Carnival include the Flight of the Angel, which marks the beginning of Carnival celebrations, the Water Procession, with decorated boats and masked rowers, and the final Grand Ball on Shrove Tuesday in Saint Mark's Square, with the traditional fireworks show in front of the Duke's palace (the Palazzo Ducale).
Truman Capote once said: “Venice is ‘like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go,’
It is a city built for show, its sights global icons of art and architecture. If you’ve never been you’re in for one of the most amazing treats of the travel world.
Sincerely yours,
